The class which has the power to rob upon a large scale has also the power to control the government and legalize their robbery.

--Eugene V. Debs

Comrades,

Bernie Sanders believes that billionaires should not ([link removed]) exist. And billionaires, by their own admission ([link removed]) , believe that Bernie Sanders should not exist. We know which side we're on!

Bernie lost a few days on the trail this week, but we know he'll be stronger than ever when he returns. Join us as we organize for a Bernie Sanders victory. Tonight, come to Classic Cars West in downtown Oakland for some beer and socializing — this is a great opportunity to learn how to plug into the DSA for Bernie campaign. And on Friday, join us as we canvass the huge crowd at Oakland's First Friday. Details below!

Bernie is the most pro-labor candidate for president since Eugene Debs ran from behind bars. If he makes it to the Oval Office, the labor movement will be on better footing than it’s been in decades. But win or lose, the task of organizing the working class on the ground still falls to ordinary people. So join us as we bridge the gap between the socialist movement and the labor movement at our Rank-and-File Job Fair on Saturday, and as we delve into the history of the labor movement to guide our organizing work on Sunday.

And, as ever, one of our most important tasks is to keep the chapter thriving and participate in its democracy. Mark your calendars, we have a general voting meeting coming up on Sunday, October 13 at 1 p.m.!

** CROWD CANVASS FOR BERNIE AT OAKLAND FIRST FRIDAY
------------------------------------------------------------
Friday, October 4 | 4:30–8:30 p.m.
Uptown Oakland, near Telegraph and Grand ♿

Join us at Oakland First Friday to crowd canvass in support of Bernie's 2020 run and democratic socialism!

A democratic socialist is a frontrunner for the presidency, and DSA is building a mass movement for socialism behind him. Bernie Sanders's 2020 run offers an unprecedented opportunity for democratic socialists to reach thousands of ordinary people with our politics, build working-class power, and make sure that California—a crucial battleground state—goes to Bernie on Super Tuesday.

Join us to talk to all kinds of folks about the issues that affect their lives and empower them to join the mass, working-class movement being built by Bernie 2020 and DSA.

** JOIN LABOR! RANK-AND-FILE UNION JOB FAIR
------------------------------------------------------------
Saturday, October 5 | 2–4 p.m.
East Bay Community Space, 507 55th St, Oakland ♿️

Join us for our second rank-and-file union job fair!

It’s clear by now to most that we as DSAers strongly support unions and the labor movement and as socialists, we recognize that a strong labor movement will have to be at the heart of a democratic socialist transformation of society. Besides continuing to support labor actions, contract campaigns, pickets, and strikes as they come about, DSAers can also support the labor movement by becoming part of it and joining the dedicated unionists on the ground floor who are organizing to make their unions as strong as possible to be able to fight for the workers in their union, industry, and society at-large. This event will start with a brief panel of workers talking about their experience organizing at their workplaces and in their unions followed by ample time for attendees to talk with workers in industries that range from education to logistics, healthcare to transportation, and trades to public sector about their jobs and how to go about getting one. If you’re looking for a new job or thinking
about leaving your current job, this opportunity is for you!

Accessibility: Wheelchair-accessible entrance and restrooms.

** LABOR READING GROUP
------------------------------------------------------------
Sunday, October 6 | 4–5:30 p.m.
Niebyl-Proctor Marxist Library, 6501 Telegraph Ave, Oakland ♿️

Today, unions make up only 10.5% of the workforce in the U.S. Wages have been stagnant since the 1970s and living standards have been declining for just as long. Housing and healthcare costs continue to rise, public transit and infrastructure continue to crumble, and more and more working people are only an emergency away from bankruptcy. A good life seems to recede further toward the horizon, further out of reach for workers. Why is this the case and how have we gotten here? What can regular working people do to come together and stand up for a country that works for all of us?

Join EBDSA’s Labor Committee on as we read A Short History of the U.S. Working Class: From Colonial Times to the Twenty-First Century by Paul LeBlanc ([link removed]) and look into the history of the struggles and achievements of the working class majority as we have fought for our ability to live full, dignified, developed lives in the face of a dehumanizing drive for profit. We will seek to understand why employers appear to be so singularly united against unions, how appeals to racism among other oppressions have divided working people from coming together to fight for their shared interests, and what happened to the militant labor leaders and socialists that drove the labor movement and working class forward from the 1870s through World War II.

We will be launching the reading group on October 6 at 4 p.m. at Niebyl Proctor Library in North Oakland. In this meeting, we will put participants into reading groups of six to eight people, distribute books (for a small suggested donation), and talk about what we hope to get out of our reading. Participants should expect to read roughly 37 pages per week for a 4 week period.

Please sign up here in advance ([link removed]) so we can do our best to make sure we have enough books and enough volunteers to staff this meeting. If you cannot make this meeting, let us know and we will get you linked up with a reading group.

Accessibility: Entrance and bathroom are wheelchair-accessible.

** VOTING GENERAL MEETING
------------------------------------------------------------
Sunday, October 13 | 1–4 p.m.
Omni Commons, 4799 Shattuck Ave, Oakland ♿️

East Bay DSA's bimonthly general meetings (GMs) include deliberation and voting on member-submitted resolutions, member announcements, reports from our committees, and more.

Volunteering at the GM is lively, easy, and low-commitment, and hugely benefits the meetings and thus our internal democracy. If you intend to come and would like to volunteer, let us know here ([link removed]) . Use this form, too, if you have child supervision or accessibility needs, including the need for an ASL interpreter.

With our new regular schedule, member-submitted resolutions will be accepted on a rolling basis. Please email them to [email protected] (mailto:[email protected]) . The submissions deadline for each meeting is three weeks before the meeting.

General meetings are run by the Meetings Committee. For questions or comments, or if you are interested in joining the committee, write us at [email protected] (mailto:[email protected]) !

The October Voting General Meeting will include Electoral Endorsement debate, and the full agenda will be posted here in advance of the meeting.

Accessibility Information: The Omni Commons ballroom is wheelchair-accessible via a lift and has wheelchair-accessible restrooms, and we provide child supervision and wireless microphones with runners. It is also accessible by BART (1/2 mile walk from MacArthur Station) and by AC Transit bus lines 18, 88, and 12. See more information on Omni accessibility here ([link removed]) .

EAST BAY DSA IN SEARCH OF OFFICE SPACE
Do you or someone you know have access to an office space that East Bay DSA could rent? Because we are a member-run organization with limited resources, we are looking for a low-cost, below market rate office space. Please contact [email protected] (mailto:[email protected]) if you have any leads. Thank you!

Obsession with the market seem to prevent ministers looking at the huge problem and all its ramifications in health, education and employment that come from the housing insecurity that too many face.
