Eight years ago today, I sat among a number of survivors of gun violence in the gallery of the US Senate when the bipartisan bill to expand Brady Background Checks failed. Just four months earlier a gunman killed 20 children and 6 adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

A majority of Americans supported expanded background checks.
A majority of senators voted yes on expanded background checks.
But expanded background checks failed in the Senate.

Despite bipartisan support for this gun safety legislation, Mitch McConnell and a small number of senators utilized the procedural filibuster to prevent its passage by requiring a 60-vote majority. In 2013, 55 senators supported the bill so it failed. And in nearly a decade since, change still hasn’t come to the Senate.

Eight years of inaction has stolen far too many lives and brought tragedy to countless Americans. And we have seen three high-profile mass shootings in just the past two months. It is time for meaningful action from the Senate, and they cannot fail, or we will face deadly consequences. More thoughts and prayers will not save lives – but a vote could.

We know that a comprehensive approach to gun violence requires common sense solutions to address it in all its forms. In order to get these changes for communities and people that need them the most, we need to end the filibuster – which President Obama called a relic of the Jim Crow era. Too many Americans are dying to allow Mitch McConnell and the NRA to have a veto on lifesaving policies a majority of Americans support.
