Dear John,

A few weeks ago, reports emerged that the government was placing Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers in the role of asylum officers.

However, the unprecedented shift in functions remains shrouded in secrecy.

We and our partners at the Tahirih Justice Center just filed a lawsuit to uncover more information about this move.

Read more about the lawsuit

CBP has a history of abuse and misconduct toward asylum seekers. Having CBP officers screen for humanitarian protection raises serious concerns about the fairness and legitimacy of the asylum process.

The documents we seek under the Freedom of Information Act would help us understand the new policies and how they are altering the asylum process.

As the Trump administration continues its attempts to systemically obstruct asylum seekers, we will fight back by exposing secret tactics to alter our asylum system and hold those who are making those changes accountable.

Sincerely,

Mary Kenney
