Dear John,
Facebook's Oversight Board is expected to allow Donald Trump back onto their platform any day now. YouTube's CEO has said that she plans to lift Trump's ban as well, allowing him to once again spread lies and conspiracy theories that the far right will boost with ads all over the internet.
That means millions of Americans are about to be bombarded once again with the Big Lie that the election was stolen and Donald Trump should still be president—the same lie that sparked the January 6 insurrection and that Republicans are now using to justify the biggest attack on voting rights since Jim Crow.
This really is a red-alert emergency for our democracy.
Georgia has already passed sweeping anti-democracy legislation. So far, 361 voter-suppression bills have been introduced in 47 states across the country. When Trump returns to social media, he will immediately begin pushing his Big Lie that the election was stolen to push for even more attacks on voting rights.
To stop this attack on our democracy, the Senate must pass the For the People Act (H.R. 1) right now—and that means ending the filibuster. If Democrats refuse to protect voting rights now, we may never have a free and fair election in this country again.
Will you make a donation to Inequality Media Civic Action, including to help demand the Senate pass H.R. 1 right now?
Georgia's attacks on voting rights are simply breathtaking.
They've ended "Souls to the Polls" Sunday early voting, added new photo-ID restrictions for vote-by-mail, increased hours-long lines to vote on Election Day, and even made it a crime to hand out water to voters as they wait in those long lines.
The voter suppression is so flagrant that even big corporations like Coca-Cola have come out against it, and Major League Baseball moved its annual All-Star Game out of the state. Obviously, these corporations should have spoken out sooner, but it shows that our efforts to mobilize public opinion are having a real impact.
This is the kind of momentum we need to protect voting rights and pass H.R. 1. But the minute Donald Trump is allowed to use social media to push his lies and conspiracy theories, all that momentum could be lost.
We're fighting back by mobilizing our millions of followers across social media to demand that Senate Democrats end the filibuster and pass H.R. 1, which has already passed the House. But with Trump possibly just days away from coming back onto YouTube, Facebook, and other social media platforms, we need your help to turn up the heat.
Will you donate to Inequality Media Civic Action to spread the truth and help urge Senate Democrats to pass H.R. 1 and stop GOP voter suppression?
Thanks for all you do,
Robert Reich
