Examining Visitor Use Trends in
Glacier National Park

Glacier National Park has seen a 40% growth in visitation since 2012. This unprecedented increase in popularity has implications for protecting natural and cultural resources, as well as for providing a quality visitor experience.

Thanks in part to your generous donations, social scientists from the University of Montana’s College of Forestry have been helping park managers understand visitor use patterns and trends in Glacier National Park over the past decade. The data was recently compiled into a story map to help show where, when, and how many people are hiking on the trails throughout the park. This allows managers to know if there are any shifts in hiker patterns on trails, and to make science-based decisions to protect for a range of opportunities: from very popular areas with many people and amenities to areas where visitors can experience more solitude. Managing for this range of opportunities also ensures quality visitor experience and protection of resources.

Distance Learning & Education Programs

During COVID-19, the park team turned challenge into opportunity by shifting from bringing students to the park, to bringing the park to students. The result is an expanded digital curriculum that increased the amount of interaction with schools through distance learning by 400% from the prior year. If you are a K-12 teacher and interested in a fun, interactive, curriculum-based distance learning program, visit the park's website to see all the programs and sign up.

Calling All Aspiring Junior Rangers

Thanks to your support, the Glacier Conservancy funds the supply of thousands of Junior Ranger booklets each season. It’s one of the many ways your donations help connect children with Glacier National Park. Even though Junior Rangers typically earn their badges while visiting national parks, aspiring Junior Rangers of all ages can still get involved with many digital resouces. You can also access Glacier’s Junior Ranger booklet online via the park’s website.
