Dear Friend,
Approximately 8 million metric tons of plastic waste are dumped into our world's oceans every year.[1]
This amount of plastic isn't just unsightly. It's dangerous.
We're working to end the stream of plastic pollution by urging corporations and policymakers to reduce plastic use and production -- but we can't do it alone. That's why we've set a goal of raising $25,000 by midnight on Earth Day to keep all of our campaigns going strong.
Will you support our campaign to move our country beyond plastic, Friend?
Yes, I'll donate today to U.S. PIRG's Earth Day Drive and help win reforms to reduce plastic waste.

Dangerous toxins found in plastic seep into the water we swim in and drink, as well as the seafood we eat. Some plastic additives have been found to interfere with brain development and disrupt hormone systems, and some chemicals that cling to plastic can cause cancer and birth defects.[2]
For these reasons and more, U.S. PIRG is committed to proactively preventing plastic pollution. Here's how we're doing it:
* We're building support for producer responsibility legislation. Producer responsibility legislation holds plastic manufacturers financially responsible for cleaning up pollution.[3] In addition to incentivizing the creation of less wasteful products, producer responsibility bills will save local governments billions of dollars per year by shifting the cost of managing waste. * We're advocating in Congress for the Break Free From Plastic Pollution Act. The Break Free From Plastic Pollution Act would ban many of the worst single-use plastics, including polystyrene foam takeout containers, and finance composting and recycling infrastructure.[4] Passing this bold legislation would be the single biggest step our country could take to move beyond plastic. * We're petitioning Whole Foods to put the planet over plastic. Whole Foods has led on plastics in the past, but the company recently received an "F" in a report by As You Sow for failing to reduce single-use plastic use.[5] Along with our national network, we've collected tens of thousands of signatures calling on Whole Foods to do better. And we're not stopping there. Donate now >>
