HUW MERRIMAN MP NEWSLETTER
October 2019

Street Surgeries

I’ve been leafleting residents inviting them to join me later that day in their village to discuss local and national issues or to bring individual challenges which I can help with. Read more about these positive meetings here.
Supreme Court and Prorogation

It has been yet another eventful period for Westminster. Welcome time working in the constituency came to an end when the Supreme Court ruled that MPs should return to the House. Read my Observer article here
No Deal Brexit Preparations

Parliament has ruled that an extension must be requested to avoid a No-Deal Brexit. The EU could refuse to extend so I asked the Government to confirm that we have plans in place to withstand any impact. Watch here.

Conquest Hospital visit with Amber Rudd

Amber and I spent a morning with the front-line staff, management and patients at the Conquest hospital. Read more about our visit and the new funding programme here.
Surveying Bexhill residents

Whilst Parliament was taking a breather, I was out in Bexhill surveying residents on the priorities they had for me. It’s clear that it’s not just Brexit which needs addressing.

Macmillan Coffee Morning

Thanks to the staff and residents at Saxonwood Care Home for inviting me to their superb fundraiser for Macmillan Cancer Support. Here I am taking to the black chair as quizmaster Georgie reveals that I do not have all the answers!

New Funding for our Hospitals

I welcomed the new investment for our local hospitals and funding to make the case to further improve our hospitals at existing sites in the next phase of Government money. Watch it here.
Question to the Prime Minister

I asked the PM if he will ensure that there are ramifications for Conservative MPs who refuse to back his proposed Brexit deal. Without discipline this could flounder for the fourth time. View the exchange here.

Domestic Abuse Bill

When the tone of exchanges in the House has made headlines, I was heartened by the debate I took part in for the second reading of the Domestic Abuse Bill.
Watch my speech here.
Thomas Cook Collapse

Airline insolvency laws should have been reformed after Monarch collapsed 2 years ago. I therefore took the opportunity to ask the Transport Secretary why reform did not happen when I asked for it in Parliament after Monarch collapsed. Watch our exchange here.
Visit to Stone Cross Primary School

Lovely morning with Stone Cross Primary School joining assembly, meeting the new School Council and handing out a national ICT award to the school.
New Bexhill Creative Workspace

With help of funding from the South East Local Enterprise Partnership a new creative workspace has been announced on the site of the former Premier Foods factory. Read the press release here.
United Nations Forum in Bexhill

A pleasure to speak at the Hastings and Bexhill United Nations Association. Delivering a presentation showing my experience of UK Aid being delivered to the Middle East and Africa.
