John,

We have been talking a lot about the coordinated voter suppression happening across the country. I am reaching out today to give you an update on the various voting bills moving through the legislatures in key states.

The GOP is showing tremendous coordination across states and is moving forward with bills that will have a disastrous effect on voting rights. We know they are experienced in this, and their legislative creativity is leading to truly disastrous bills.

Before I get into the details, I have to ask. Can you donate $25 so we can keep pushing back against these racist, anti-democratic bills? Your donation will also help us track legislation and stop these bills from becoming law.

Most of the national focus has been on Georgia’s SB 202. There are many provisions to this bill, but the key takeaway is that the changes in this bill can very well be enough to suppress more voters than Pres. Biden’s margin of victory in 2020 and the Senate run-offs. With Rev. Sen. Warnock up for reelection next year, we will need to dedicate significant efforts to organize our way out of this voter suppression trap set by Republicans.

Iowa signed a voter suppression bill limiting absentee voting which would shorten the absentee voting period from 29 days to 18 days , limit ballot collection, and penalize county auditors that try to make it easier for voters to return their ballots. Last year, 70% of Iowa Democrats voted early or by mail and Iowa voters are outraged at the rollbacks to access in a state that’s been historically friendly to voters. Vote From Home is channeling that energy to defeat Republicans at the ballot box in 2022.

In Arizona, the legislature is moving forward with a bill that will fundamentally change the state’s Permanent Early Voting List (PEVL) and potentially purge 125,000-150,000 voters from the list. The state had a fantastic early voting system, but Republicans believe that with this move, they can disenfranchise enough voters to defeat Senator Mark Kelly and flip the Senate in 2022.

In Texas, SB7 and HB6 would threaten voter turnout programs with criminal prosecution, ban convenient drive-thru voting, and bans election officials from proactively sending mail ballot applications to voters.

I also want to point out that we did have two big wins.

In Kentucky, we saw a fascinating exercise in bipartisanship. Democratic Governor Andy Beshear worked with the Republican legislature on a comprehensive bill that includes an expansion of voting rights. What’s different about Kentucky is Republicans don’t see increased access to the ballot box as a threat to their power, like Texas and Georgia which are swiftly becoming purple states. With Republican supermajorities entrenched in power and a much less diverse and more conservative population, Republicans are really showing their true colors by supporting voting from home just so long as it doesn't threaten their grip on government.

Lastly, a Georgia bill to end no-excuse absentee voting has failed. That happened because of the work of groups like ours and donors like you. So, there is hope. If we show up to this challenge with the same will as the other side, we can have many more victories.

I hope this update gives you a bit of hope but also serves as a reminder of the resources we will need to continue this fight. If you want to help us put a stop to these coordinated attacks on voting rights, please donate $25.

Vote From Home is a grassroots movement that's fighting to expand vote-by-mail. We helped thousands of Democrats vote safely from home in Pennsylvania, Michigan, North Carolina and Georgia in 2020 and 2021. Now we're focused on stopping politicians and legislation who are making it harder for Americans to vote by mail. Please forward this email if you know someone who may be interested. Our average gift is just under $39 so consider donating that today to support voting rights: [link removed]
