John,

Remember when Donald Trump threatened to send an “army” of poll watchers to voting places, in an echo of Jim Crow-era intimidation tactics? That army never materialized -- but now officials in Texas are looking to make good on the threat, and other states may not be far behind.

- Sweeping voter suppression legislation passed by the Texas Senate would “allow partisan poll watchers to record voters who receive help filling out their ballots.”

- One Texas GOP official even said those poll watchers must have the “courage” and “confidence” to monitor election sites in Black and Latinx communities.

“Giving them unlimited opportunities to question people, it’s really an intimidation tactic. You can bet these poll watchers will not be deployed in safe Republican districts. It will impact people who are Hispanic and African Americans.” -- A.G. Holder

John, courts have found that poll watchers intimidate people of color and work to exclude them from voting. This is just another brazen attempt by Republicans to limit the franchise to their preferred voters so they can extend their minority rule.

At the NDRC, we’re working to stop voter suppression and intimidation tactics in states across the country and pass federal legislation to protect the right to vote. Will you pitch in to help us get it done?
