Hi John,

This morning, on the 14th anniversary of Virginia Tech, the deadliest school shooting in our nation’s history, we woke up to news of yet another mass shooting in America. This time it was Indianapolis, where eight people were killed and several more were wounded when a former employee opened fire at a FedEx facility. Yet another community devastated, another workplace shattered, another city name now synonymous with tragedy.

This news came the day after body camera footage was released showing the horrific fatal police shooting of 13-year-old Adam Toledo in Little Village, Illinois. It also came after a month of brutal reminders of the toll of the gun violence epidemic. One month ago today was the mass shooting in Atlanta. Then it was Boulder. Then Daunte Wright. Then Seattle’s Central District. Then Knoxville. And we know that countless others didn’t get enough media attention to make this list but were no less devastating.

We don’t have to live like this and we don’t have to die like this. We know that there are steps we can take to prevent gun violence in all its forms, from mass shootings to police shootings. We just need our lawmakers to act.

Last week, the Biden Administration took historic action to address the gun violence epidemic, calling for many policies already in place here in Washington. But as the president acknowledged, executive actions alone are not enough. Congress must act now to stop the bloodshed, starting with expanding background checks. And here in Washington state, our lawmakers must act swiftly to get the package of vital police accountability bills across the finish line.

We will be working tirelessly to demand more than thoughts and prayers from our lawmakers and honor all victims of gun violence with action.

Sincerely,
Renée (she/her)

PS - This Tuesday, April 20th, we will be gathering virtually for our 9th annual luncheon to reflect on and fundraise for the work ahead. I hope you will join us: [link removed]
