Dear John:
I'm proud that the House voted today to pass my bill to protect front line health care workers from violence.
When this bill passed the House in 2019, it faced stiff resistance -- not only was Mitch McConnell likely to let this bill collect dust like so many other measures he blocked action on, but Trump also threatened to veto it.
What a difference two years make!
Now, our bill has the support of President Biden and his administration. And, thanks to the results of the 2020 election and the Georgia special, we now have a democratic Senate to work with. 38 republicans even joined with us today to pass the bill - more than we saw two years ago.
Today's strong House vote for my bill is even more important in light of the pandemic, when so many front line health care workers put themselves on the line to care for our communities. Alarmingly, health care workers suffer nearly three-quarters of all workplace violence incidents nationwide, with rates increasing 54% since 2001. Hospital workers are five times as likely to experience a serious workplace violence incident than all other workers - higher still if you are a psychiatric worker, home care worker, or nursing aide My bill would address this growing problem by establishing a strong national standard to protect our health care workers.
I've worked hard to build bipartisan support for this effort and break through the partisan gridlock to get this done. I'm proud of our results today and will keep fighting to move this bill forward.
Thanks as always for your continued support.
