John, I wanted to drop in to say a heartfelt thank you.
We just wrapped up the legislative session here in Santa Fe, and I am so proud of everything we achieved for New Mexico families. We proved that we can still make meaningful progress – even during this challenging time for our nation.
Here's what we got done:
* Together, we put money back in the pockets of middle-class New Mexicans by slashing taxes for working families.
* Together, we delivered $200 million in pandemic relief to New Mexico's small businesses.
* Together, we scored big wins for New Mexico's students by boosting school funding in tribal communities, creating a new public advocate for special education students and clearing a pathway for early childhood education funding that's sustainable.
* Together, we repealed outdated laws that criminalize abortion care – reinforcing reproductive rights in our state.
* Together, we passed the NM Civil Rights Act, ending qualified immunity as a legal defense for government employees, including police officers. This will make sure that all state agencies are held accountable to the public and the rights of individuals are protected.
* And together, we made history by legalizing recreational cannabis, which will generate millions of dollars for local governments, and expunge the records of those with cannabis-related offenses, which will help bring social justice in ways in which we have been talking about for years.
John, big victories like these only happen when they've got the support of the people. None of this would have been possible without grassroots support from across the state – from people like you.
We're starting to get a glimpse of life after this pandemic – and I know that good things lie ahead. Thank you, thank you, for being a part of this team.
Michelle Lujan Grisham
