Welcome to another installment of 21 to Watch in ‘21 – a biweekly series where we spotlight and introduce you to some of the people and issues to keep your eye on in the progressive movement this year.
Our fifth spotlight belongs to Maya Wiley, candidate for Mayor of New York City!
Although she has never held office before, she is no stranger to city hall and formerly served the citizens of the Empire State as counsel to the mayor. Maya knows what it takes to deliver on the issues that New Yorkers care about most like racial justice, tackling the climate crisis, and creating affordable housing so that everyone can live with dignity.
New York City has never elected a woman Mayor – not once in over 355 years. That’s about to change.
Being first means you have bold actions to back up your bold vision and you are not afraid to blaze a trail. Maya is certainly up to the task.

On why she is running for mayor:
"I’m running for mayor to keep people first. And that means protect and serve."
On receiving DFA’s endorsement:
"Democracy for America represents why I am running, who I am running for, and how I am running. It is the principle that is the people and the people's voice. First and foremost, it is the principle that our governance must be about all of us. And it is about social justice. It is about the fight for equality, equity, and inclusion. It is about the fact that we will organize and that we will lift up voices loud and proud, and also hold leaders accountable. And for me, this has been one of the greatest gifts, because it is a recognition of who we are as a campaign, who I am as a candidate, and who I want to walk beside in this journey."
On her chances of winning:
"Well, the first fact, every single democracy for America members should know is we will win. We will make history because we will do it -- together. That is the way we get it done together."
