April 22nd marks Earth Day, and there is a lot of climate momentum building in the U.S. right now that is worthy of celebration. The Biden administration will be holding a Leaders Summit on Climate next week, bringing world leaders together to underscore the urgency—and the economic benefits—of stronger climate action. The Summit will be a key milestone on the road to the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) this November in Glasgow.

Ceres is pleased to be hosting three events complementing the Leaders Summit on Climate, bringing investors and business leaders together to support U.S. climate action and push the Biden administration to go even further to address the climate crisis. These events are open and free to the public and we hope you’ll be able to join us.

Significant worldwide momentum currently exists for investors and banks to set net-zero targets and publish comprehensive climate action plans. Recently the nonprofit organization Ceres, with its global investor group partners in Asia, Australia and Europe, launched the Paris Aligned Investment Initiative and the Net Zero Asset Managers Initiative.

Ceres has also been working with the nation’s major banks to encourage them to establish ambitious net-zero commitments and to increase their climate disclosure. The six largest U.S. banks have recently agreed to set net-zero targets and are now implementing these commitments.

John Kerry, United States Special Presidential Envoy for Climate will join Ceres CEO and President Mindy Lubber and other special guests to discuss the critical roles the private sector and the Biden administration are playing to tackling the climate crisis and ensure a sustainable future. Leading businesses have committed to emissions reduction targets in line with the Paris Agreement Goal of 1.5℃ and are taking bold action. The business community is looking to governments to set ambitious policies that will accelerate the transition to a net-zero future—especially leading up to 2030. Just this week, Ceres and the We Mean Business coalition organized more than 300 companies calling on the Biden Administration to set an ambitious Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) to protect the U.S. economy and “build back better.”

On Wednesday April 21, 10:30 am-12 pm ET, Ceres and the We Mean Business coalition will present a dynamic, cross-sector panel conversation with U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm and C-suite leaders from IKEA Retail U.S., Siemens USA, Ørsted, LafargeHolcim and more, all of whom are leading voices in the climate crisis. This session will be moderated by Justin Worland, senior correspondent at TIME.

As the world’s nations convene at the Leaders Summit on Climate to advance global climate policy ambition, we will convene a panel of CEOs from the We Mean Business coalition partners. The coalition brings together seven organizations: BSR, CDP, Ceres, The B Team, The Climate Group, CLG Europe and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development. Their CEOs will explore how business and government can work together to accelerate progress and unlock innovation, particularly in the lead-up to COP26.

On Friday April 23, 10:00 - 11:00 am ET, the coalition partners will explore how business and government can work together to accelerate progress and unlock innovation, particularly in the lead-up to COP26 in November.
