Tallahassee, FL – The Senate has voted to pass House Bill 1 (HB 1). The anti-protest bill is designed to criminalize residents in Florida for exercising their rights under the First Amendment.

By defining the term “rioting” the bill allows law enforcement to decide who to arrest and charge with a third-degree felony charge, and therefore, strip people of their voting rights. The Broward Democratic Party stands in solidarity with Floridians in condemning further passage of this Bill. We are committed to doing everything in our power to get it repealed by electing Democrats to the State House and the Senate.

This bill is unconstitutional, antidemocratic, and racist. It is directed at minorities as it is designed to encourage prejudice against people of color exercising their constitutional right to protest. The passage of this bill not only empowers Gov. DeSantis and his enablers to shut down political speech and attack First Amendment rights head on. It is a disgrace and those in Tallahassee working to pass this bill should be held accountable!

This bill is on it's way to Gov. DeSantis' desk as we speak! Contact the Governor or your Representatives NOW and urge them to keep the pressure on and defend Floridians by asking Gov. DeSantis NOT TO SIGN THIS BILL!
