John,
While the national spotlight is on Minnesota and police murder, we wanted to pause for a moment to update you on the unionization efforts in Bessemer, Alabama:
The struggle for Black liberation is as long-standing as this nation’s history -- and our fight won’t end until we get it.
Though the Amazon Union vote results late last week are not what we were hoping for,
there is still work and people-power worth celebrating and building on.
There’s no power like the power of the people -- and thanks to the people, we were able to send funds to support unionization efforts, including toward combating an overwhelming amount of Amazon disinformation on the ground. Labor unions, racial justice organizations, and Black Amazon workers fearlessly fought for a living wage, job protections, and respect in the workplace.
All of these efforts set the stage for the countless Black workers across the entire country to continue the fight for dignity in the workplace. And the fight in Bessemer isn't over -- union organizers have already filed complaints over Amazon's intimidation and interference, which could trigger a new vote.
Most importantly -- we are beyond grateful for the Black organizers doing the groundwork in Bessemer. Their efforts and the work of this monumental fight were not in vain.
We’re sending our love and solidarity to organizers in Bessemer who led this unionization fight, who are continuing to demand dignity and justice for workers -- and you can too. Sign the thank you card >>
We view this moment as one step in the movement toward economic justice, one that allows Black communities to live out just what this nation promised.
The struggle for economic justice and Black liberation -- where people across the diaspora thrive and experience joy -- continues to be the movement’s North Star.
In love and solidarity,
Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation
