Message From The Executive Board:

Comrades,

As the 2021 DSA Convention approaches, we are beginning our process of electing delegates to represent the Sacramento chapter and participate in votes on national resolutions, as well as the election of our next National Political Committee. Our next General Membership Meeting, this Saturday at 1:30pm, will focus on the process and timeline for our internal election of delegates, as well as the role and responsibilities of the delegates and alternates who will be attending the convention.

As our national campaigns like Pass the PRO Act and our ongoing fight for Medicare for All continue to develop interest in the public and make victories, determining the future of DSA’s priorities and work at the national level is an important step to making sure these campaigns can continue to develop into powerful tools to fight against the a class society that will fight against our work at every turn. Even now, as we plan for our future events, the situation for the majority of working people across the country and world have not improved. The Biden administration, stumbling into post-COVID world, is totally unequipped to grapple with the reality of how badly working people suffered due to mass unemployment in the pandemic, continues to ignore the racist police violence that continues to claim the lives of innocent Black Americans, and rigidly continues to carry out imperialist violence at our southern border and abroad. Whatever progress has been made was fought for, every step of the way, by organized working people. DSA’s role in the future of that work will be laid out at our convention this summer, and our involvement as a chapter is crucial.

Hope to see you there tomorrow.

In Solidarity,

Sacramento DSA E-Board

Volunteer Now to Pass the PRO Act

Image

From now until May Day (Biden's 100th day in office), DSA, through our national Green

New Deal campaign and Democratic Socialist Labor Commission (DSLC) is joining the national campaign to pass the PRO (Protect the Right to Organize) Act.

DSA’s Pass the PRO Act campaign is building momentum and making real gains.

Sen. Angus King (I-ME) has become the latest PRO Act cosponsor! DSA’s National PRO Act campaign made more than 500,000 calls to connect constituents in key states directly to their senators. Hearing directly from voters in his state is what convinced Sen. King to stand with workers. A number of Sac DSA members have phone banked or donated or both for this campaign. As the heartbreaking Amazon loss demonstrated, we need the PRO Act more than ever. That’s why it’s critical that we keep pressuring the remaining senators who have not committed to making it law.

Even after the PRO Act cleared its first hurdle after passing through the U.S. House 225 to 206, our organizing efforts have not slowed down. We know that elected representatives will not let the most significant pro labor law in nearly a century pass without a fight. Instead, we joined labor in pressuring representatives across the country and successfully whipped the votes of elected officials.

Now is our chance to make history and pass it through the Senate, but it will only happen with your help. Join our PRO Act phone banks April 17th through the 30th by signing up for shift today.

Demand Congress champion the PRO ACT and pass it by any means necessary.

ON STRIKE for #AB257 - Fight for $15

Over the next two weeks, fast-food workers across CA will be ON STRIKE for #AB257.

During the pandemic, workers have organized, been on strike, and won safer workplaces through programs like the Restaurant Organizing Project. But in spite of the need for immediate action,

It shouldn't be this hard. California's over half-a-million fast-food workers deserve a voice on the job.

Die-in at Capitol for Single Payer

DSA chapters across the state are campaigning for AB 1400, also known as CalCare, which would establish universal single-payer health insurance for Californians. We’ve been calling and canvassing constituents to get them to pressure their representatives into co-sponsoring the bill, but we need to make sure Governor Newsom is feeling the heat too. That’s why Sacramento DSA is planning a die-in at the capitol on April 26th at 5:30 PM to pressure Newsom into requesting a waiver from the Biden administration which would secure partial funding for the system.

We need your help to make this event a success! Join us Thursdays at 5:30 for our event planning meeting. Email Johnny Lucas at [email protected] for more information.

RSVP for Die-in here:

While you’re at it, sign this open letter to Sacramento City Council urging them to pass a resolution in support of CalCare.

Mutual Aid Opportunities This Week

Upcoming National DSA Events & Programs

These events are hosted by National DSA or chapters outside Sacramento. As with all DSA events, they are free and open to anyone!

Pre-Convention Conferences

With the 2021 national convention coming soon, DSA is hosting national pre-convention conferences to give potential delegates and other members an idea of what to expect at the convention, to meet comrades across the country, and to get the opportunity to engage in political discussion.

This year’s pre-convention conferences we will be discussing the platform, talking about what it means to be a delegate, and preparing for this year’s National Convention.

The five pre-convention conferences will be open to any member and run from May 15th to June 15. We strongly encourage those who are planning on or considering being a convention delegate to register for them.

What We're Reading (Or Viewing, Or Listening To...)

This is a space where we link to interesting articles, videos, podcasts -- whatever -- that our members have shared with each other on our chapter Slack. We are re-sharing them here in case others are interested; they do not necessarily represent “official” positions or endorsements of DSA.

To Unionize Amazon, We Need To Pass The PRO Act” by Brandon Magner

“Here’s a good article on how the PRO Act would empower union organizers to win organizing drives like the campaign in Bessemer in the currently incredibly unfair landscape of the current rules.

Brazil's Supreme Court confirms annulment of Lula graft convictions

In the lead up to what will be an incredibly important election for Brazil, Lula, the Worker's Party candidate, has had his illegitimate conviction finally annulled by the country's criminal justice system.

Sen. Mark Kelly is emerging as an obstacle to the PRO Act" by Ryan Grim

An excellent summary of the current national situation surrounding the PRO Act as it fights for every vote in the Senate.
