Black women are leaders, activists, and mothers; we play a critical role in our society. Throughout this country's history, Black women — and Black mothers in particular — have led the racial justice and Reproductive Justice movements. Black women are creating a better future for everyone, and we need to stand for the health, rights, and justice of all Black mothers.

Black moms should be seen, embraced, and supported at all stages of pregnancy — and beyond — and the Black Maternal Health Momnibus is a crucial first step towards fair and equal access to health care.


This series of bills addresses the root causes of maternal mortality, especially among Black women, with real, smart solutions, including:

• 12-month postpartum Medicaid coverage
• Investments in rural maternal health
• Growing and diversifying the perinatal workforce
• Implementing implicit bias trainings among medical staff

Urge your representatives to support the Momnibus and give Black mothers the support they need.

The Black maternal health crisis is rooted in racism, plain and simple. Systemic inequalities and mistreatment within the medical system have increased Black women's chances of complications during pregnancy, labor and delivery, as well as the postpartum period. Even the stress of experiencing racism can take a deadly toll on a Black woman's body, causing greater health risks. Based on chromosomal structures, Black women in their 40s and 50s experience premature aging or "weathering"; and aged an average of 7.5 years more than white women of comparable years, according to one study.

Protecting the health of Black mothers means fighting for a world where racism at all levels is eliminated; health care is treated as a human right; and high-quality care is accessible to all. We need Congress to pass the Momnibus act now.
