Last Sunday in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, 20-year-old Daunte Wright was shot and killed by the police just miles away from where George Floyd was murdered last summer. Daunte was unarmed, sitting in his own car, and had been pulled over for hanging air fresheners from his rearview mirror.
The officer who murdered Daunte -- Kim Potter -- has been charged with second-degree manslaughter. But because of qualified immunity, there is zero guarantee that Potter will be brought to justice.
Our justice system doesn't just allow police officers to get away with murdering unarmed Black people -- it guarantees it.
We are sick and tired of witnessing the pattern of police officers killing Black people and then getting to walk away with zero consequences. It's why we launched The Collective PAC's Justice For All Initiative to end qualified immunity and pursue progressive criminal justice reform at every single level of government.
Listen, we can't change the laws without changing the lawmakers and the people who enforce them. If you agree ending qualified immunity is how we create a more just policing system, add your name to the petition ยป
There can't be two systems of justice, one for police officers and one for everyone else. Officers who brutalize and murder people need to be charged at the same level as citizens.
