Washington, DC - OCA - Asian Pacific American Advocates applauds the court for their decision in favor of Harvard, supporting affirmative action and diversity. The case was decided on Tuesday afternoon in a 130-page ruling.

Affirmative action has continuously been upheld by the courts, in other cases such as Fisher v University of Texas, Regents of the University of California v Blake, and others as listed in the NY TImes “A Timeline of Key Supreme Court Cases on Affirmative Action.”

“All students deserve to be judged on the entirety of their story -- who they are and what they have overcome,” said Rita Pin Ahrens, OCA National Executive Director. “Race conscious policies and affirmative action allow for that to happen, and gives everyone a fair shot. It’s important for us to remember how diverse our country and even our AAPI community is and the struggles that remain in accessing college. We even have examples of Asian American and Pacific Islander leaders within the civil rights space who benefited from affirmative action policies, like my colleague Quyen Dinh, Executive Director of the Southeast Asia Resource Action Center.”

Affirmative action policies can level the playing field for the diverse AAPI community, which has been shown to have tremendous income and education disparity through disaggregated US Census data. For example, Southeast Asian Americans have some of the lowest rates of higher education attainment: between 50-60% of Southeast Asian Americans over the age of 25 have not attended college.

OCA continues to work for and support policies that increase education access and opportunity across the AAPI community, including race-conscious admissions policies.
