Dear Supporter,
Those were the words I heard 14 years ago today. A bullet grazed my daughter’s skull as she was in her French class at Virginia Tech University in what was the largest mass shooting in American history at the time.
She would be okay -- but 32 other students, staff, and their families would not. The university, community, state and nation were stunned by this horrific act of violence. I was shaken to my core. The tragedy motivated me to spend nearly a decade and a half working, lobbying, and helping pass life-saving legislation in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Creating change is not easy. It is a long, difficult process. There are ups and downs. Setbacks and successes. But showing up at the Virginia General Assembly to build coalitions and continue to advocate for better gun laws these many years paid off. In the 15 months since gun violence prevention champions took control of the General Assembly we have passed 20 laws to make Virginia safer.
If this type of change can happen in the home state of the National Rifle Association, it can happen in any state. The gun violence prevention movement is stronger than ever, while the once powerful NRA is bankrupt and teetering on irrelevance.
The path to these triumphs has led to a political (and moral) high ground.
For over 47 years, the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence has been on the frontlines of this battle. We helped lead the fight in Virginia and we are doing the same in states across the country. We are engaged in passing stronger gun legislation at the federal level and finding evidence-based policy solutions to reduce the persistently high rate of gun death and injury in this nation.
By investing and advocating for better gun policies, we can build a safer and more secure United States of America. I know change is possible. I’ve seen it.
Please make a gift today to make America safer place! [[link removed]]

Lori Haas
