Executive Directors Message
Somehow 2019 seems to be flying by. Archery deer season has already started. Most places still have plenty of crops in the field and things may be tough for bow hunters but that may help the gun hunters. Harvesting has begun but the places are spotty. Much of the corn crop was planted late so it is common to see a brown field next to a green field. Add to
that, the problem of very wet conditions so everything will be localized. Deer will be moving, particularly at night, when the moon is up. There is a full moon on the 13th so a week either side of that date will be dangerous. Be careful when you drive.
The ISRA Annual Sighting-In-Day will be held on October 19th. Come out to our Range and sight-in your shotgun, rifle, pistol, muzzleloader or bow. This event is open to the public, with free parking. History tidbits: October 4th is Charlton Heston’s birthday. Mr. Heston was an acquaintance and as nice a person as you would ever meet. He went to Northwestern University and was a member of the Smallbore Rifle team. October 5th is the anniversary of the Dalton Gang Raid in Coffeyville, Kansas, in 1892. Armed citizens turned out to support the police and decimated the gang - the Second Amendment at work. The 2018 FBI Uniform Crime Report has just been released. It takes a while to compile all the data into usable statistics which is why it is released in September or October each year. Violent crime is down 3.3% from 2017. In 2018, there were 14,123 murders in the United States. Firearms were involved in 10,256 or 72.6% of them. Despite the uproar, rifles of all types accounted for only 297 of them or 2.1% of all murders. The anti-gun crowd loves to talk about a murder epidemic but the fact is the statistics show the opposite. I am sure concealed carry has a lot to do with that. Speaking of murder rates, the City of Chicago has just announced that the Chicago Police Department will no longer be allowed to cooperate with ICE Agents. Chicago is already riddled with drug gangs and gang related murders. This will only make matters worse. This stupid decision will put every man, woman and child in Chicago at greater risk. Whatever happened to “no one is above the law?” This is lousy public policy. If you are a Chicago resident, you need to get a concealed carry permit pronto. I would be looking for a class today. The Illinois House of Representative has formed a task force on gun violence. Here is our official statement on the task force: Illinois State Rifle Association Executive Director Richard Pearson is issuing the following statement on the formation of the Illinois House Task Force on Gun Violence, which is comprised of 12 Republicans and 12 Democrats and is being asked to present a comprehensive bill for consideration to the full legislative body. “We all can agree that the violence in the City of Chicago is a major concern. Innocent people are being killed in senseless acts of violence and there is no question we need real, meaningful solutions to this problem. The Illinois State Rifle Association is committed to working with the Illinois General Assembly on workable solutions to gun violence. We have advocated for years for better, more consistent enforcement of existing gun laws. We believe any serious solution to the violence we see every weekend in Chicago must include better enforcement of the laws we already have. We are hopeful that this Task Force does not become a platform for gun control advocates to advance legislation that will accomplish nothing more than punishing law-abiding citizens. The intent behind this Task Force seems to be to find real, thoughtful solutions to a growing problem and we are hopeful that the final legislation coming out of this Task Force is in keeping with the intentions upon which the Task Force has been formed. We are ready, willing and able to work with the Task Force on real solutions, but we will stand in strong opposition to any proposal we believe violates the 2nd Amendment rights guaranteed by our Constitution. We, like the members of this Task Force, want to stop the violence in Chicago and we believe there is no need to strip away the rights of law-abiding citizens to accomplish this goal.” I am pleased to announce the ISRA will be hosting a Glock Armorer’s Course at our Range on January 9th, 2020.
