GOP AGs want to halt D.C. statehood with more legal threats.
Friend, every time we make progress, you can count on the GOP Attorneys General to be fast on our heels, aiming to tear it down.
Their target this week? The push for D.C. statehood.
This week, 22 GOP AGs sent a letter to President Biden and congressional leaders, threatening legal action if the Washington D.C. Admissions Act is passed and signed.
Per usual, they’re flinging out every bad-faith argument they can – including the idea that giving the people who live in D.C. equal representation is the equivalent of creating “a super-state” – all for the sake of obstructing progress.
To be clear: The incredibly diverse – and incredibly disenfranchised – population of D.C. exceeds those of Vermont and Wyoming and pays more federal taxes per capita than any other state. Residents serve in our military, our juries, and help lift up our economy with thriving small businesses – without full representation in Congress.
Still, the GOP AGs have attacked the movement for D.C. statehood as “bad policy,” and blustered that the “District’s residents have all willingly lived there with an understanding of its unique nature.”
In a city that is historically Black, home to many generations of Black families and communities of color who still make up a majority of the city to this day, it is outrageous to imply that anyone chose and consented to their own disenfranchisement.
Friend, GOP AGs have made it clear they’re not accountable to the public; they’re doing the dirty work of Republican elites who are bent on blocking progress to their own benefit.
With over 30 AGs races in the next two years, we’re grateful for your support.
Thank you,
