Friend, almost a year ago, the Navajo Nation reported the country’s highest infection rates, surpassing big cities like New York and New Jersey in the spread of the deadly coronavirus. While not new the pandemic exposed the vast healthcare inequity within Native Communities.
Now, the Navajo nation leads most of the country in vaccine distribution, with more than half of its 170,000 residents fully vaccinated.
The Navajo Nation’s success against COVID-19 is a testament to our resilience and dedication to tribal traditions. Native culture emphasizes the importance of bettering our communities and working together to ensure that we are all taken care of. Since the beginning of the pandemic, we each have done our part to ensure the safety of our tribe(s). Through very strict lockdowns and mask mandates, we have triumphed against massive healthcare inequity caused by institutional racism and anti-Native sentiments that have existed since long before the founding of our Nation.
Our shared Arizona values and commitment to working together has allowed Arizona's tribal communities to excel at vaccine distribution, and are now helping non-native communities with their vaccine distribution. Against all odds, our commitment to teamwork and community has helped us prevail in the face of darkness and uncertainty, and with pride, we will continue to push forward toward a brighter, safer tomorrow.
In solidarity,
Rachel Hood
