The House is pursuing a formal impeachment inquiry into President Trump, which is a long-awaited step toward holding the president accountable for his reckless abuses of power.
The revelations of the past two weeks about the President’s abuse of his office to pressure a foreign country to investigate a political rival are truly outrageous and fully merit an impeachment inquiry. However, reports indicate that the inquiry may only address this latest outrage.
That’s a good start, but they must go further.
Time is of the essence, as this inquiry is likely to move quickly. We need to make it clear to Congress that we applaud the important steps they’ve taken, but we’re counting on them to fully investigate all of President Trump’s most serious abuses of power, including not just his pressuring of Ukraine for his own political gain, but also his obstruction of justice, profiting off the presidency, and violations of campaign finance laws.
Will you email your member of Congress and ask them to support a comprehensive impeachment inquiry into the president’s potential high crimes and misdemeanors?
Even before the news broke of the whistle blower complaint, which is truly an appalling abuse of presidential power, President Trump had already engaged in conduct meriting an impeachment inquiry. We cannot ignore those concerns.
Not only are the President’s pattern of obstruction and lawlessness, as well as his non-stop self-enrichment and constitutional violations, serious abuses that must be addressed, but they are also integral to the latest abuses. After all, we learned last week that the President of the Ukraine, in his effort to win favor with President Trump, specifically mentioned staying at one of Trump’s properties; the Ukraine episode also appears to have included efforts to undercut aspects of the Mueller investigation, as well as allegations of a cover up and possible campaign finance violations. It all works together to paint a chilling picture of a corrupt president. Congress should fully investigate and hold the president accountable for the full scope of his potentially impeachable behavior.
Our democracy, and the rule of law, depends on not letting the president escape accountability for abusing his power on multiple counts. A thorough and comprehensive impeachment inquiry is the right way to proceed. Tell Congress to move forward with an investigation into President Trump’s serious abuses of power.
