Dear Friend,
New Politics is dedicated to revitalizing democracy, and critical to this work is supporting service women who are running for office, making their voices heard, and demanding change. With this in mind, we thought that we’d take a moment to dispel some of the myths we often hear about women in politics:
- Myth: Women who run for office are less likely than men to be successful on Election Day.
Reality: Men and women have comparable win rates in elections — there are simply fewer female candidates who run.
- Myth: Women can’t fundraise as well as men can.
Reality: Data shows that there are not significant differences between fundraising performance between male and female candidates.
- Myth: A woman’s appearance will be the focal point of her campaign and her looks will be attacked.
Reality: Although there are a small number of well-known examples of this form of sexism, it is not the experience of most women who run.
Let’s make history together by electing more women than ever before. We recently launched “Serve, Lead, Unite,” our candidate recruiting initiative as we gear up for the 2022 cycle. If you’re a servant leader, please get in touch today to connect with us about serving our country in elected office. If not, please nominate someone in your network who would serve with courage, integrity, and empathy.
PS — Last month, we featured two inspiring women on our podcast. Listen to Dr. Max Klau’s interviews with Amy McGrath and Elizabeth Beck on our feed.
