Hi John —
This past week our nation witnessed the murder of yet another unarmed Black man at the hands of law enforcement.
But Daunte Wright’s killing was not random. It was the result of a broken police system with almost no accountability or transparency; where violence, misconduct, and racism are rarely punished.
But it’s not just our system of law enforcement that’s failed us — City Hall is just as responsible. Year after year they reward the NYPD with massive budgets that provide unnecessary military weapons and vehicles at the expense of our communities. It’s time for that to change.
I am one of the only candidates in this race not afraid to say that we need to defund the police.
We need to reinvest our enormous and excessive policing budgets back into communities. It’s long past time for us to fund mental health care, social services, and proven crime reduction methods that don’t terrorize our neighborhoods.
