All members of Congress take an oath to defend our Constitution against all threats, foreign and domestic. Well, we are facing a domestic threat to our Constitution every day in this country.

Police officers pulled over Second Lieutenant Caron Nazario, claiming it was because his SUV did not have a license plate. They trampled all over his Fourth Amendment rights. He was screamed at. Threatened. And pepper sprayed multiple times. All while wearing his Army uniform.

This episode of brazen and outrageous violence reminds us all what kind of treatment of people of color can expect from the police. That’s why VoteVets is joining Senator Tammy Duckworth to demand a FULL Department of Justice investigation into this incident and for the officers involved to be held accountable. At one point during the interaction, Lt. Nazario told the officers he was afraid to get out of his car. The officer responded, “Yeah, you should be.” That is a direct threat on Lt. Nazario’s life.

If members of Congress are to take their oath of office seriously, they must take immediate action to STOP police violence against Black and Brown people in our streets.

Enough is enough.
