News broke yesterday that Senators Kyrsten Sinema and Mitt Romney are trying to work out a deal on raising the minimum wage to something LESS than $15 an hour. This comes after Pramila fought to include a $15 minimum wage in the relief package that passed the House of Representatives in February.
Organizers have been fighting for a $15 minimum wage for over a decade. It’s LONG overdue. We simply can’t compromise on giving 32 million workers a raise and lifting 1 million people out of poverty.
To some people, like the Republicans and moderate Democrats working on this so-called compromise, the difference between $15/hour and $11 or $12/hour may just seem like a few bucks. But really, it’s the chance to finally secure some economic justice and stability for working people. Congress cannot keep legislating for the rich and powerful, while leaving workers behind again and again.
Pramila is on the forefront of this fight in Congress to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour. Back in 2014, she helped make Seattle the first major city in the country to pass a $15 minimum wage. So she knows that compromise on this issue isn’t an option for the people struggling to pay rent and put food on the table — all while the rich get richer.
