Last week, the Biden Administration announced that it will not shut down the Dakota Access pipeline while the project’s environmental review is underway.
That means the pipeline will continue to operate illegally, endangering the community and violating the rights of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe.
This decision is very disappointing, but the fight isn't over. This environmental review is our chance to stop the project permanently and we believe that with enough pressure and a thorough review – we will win.
While the review is being completed, we must put pressure on the White House every day and call on President Biden to permanently shut down the pipeline in line with his commitment to improving tribal consultation and taking bold action to tackle the climate crisis. So we’re asking:
There’s still hope to stop the pipeline in the short-term. The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe is still seeking an injunction from the court to halt the pipeline’s operation until the environmental review is complete.
But while we wait for the ruling on the injunction, we must call out President Biden for taking a stance that is identical to that of the Trump Administration. The fact remains that this pipeline is incompatible with our climate goals and Indigenous rights.
We know that it can take months (sometimes years) of sustained pressure to win, but we can’t give up. We need to show our outrage now and continue speaking out against this disastrous project.
Together we can make it clear that Biden’s decision jeopardizes the health and safety of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, and that his administration must permanently shut down the pipeline now.
Please send a letter now urging Biden to do the right thing and permanently shut down this project.
