Louisiana’s coast is facing some of the most rapid land loss in the world. Today, we have an opportunity to advance the largest and most important coastal restoration project in our nation’s history. This is a game-changer for the coast and our communities.
The Mid-Barataria Sediment Diversion project will help restore the Barataria Basin, an area that faces the most severe land loss on the Louisiana coast, and was also ground zero for the devastation of the BP oil spill. Without action, 80% of the basin’s marshes could be lost, an additional 428 square miles of land over the next 50 years, threatening Louisiana’s communities, culture, livelihoods and abundant natural resources.
This project will harness the natural power of the Mississippi River to divert over 300 million tons of sediment into rapidly-vanishing wetlands, restoring the health of the entire ecosystem and building and maintaining thousands of acres to buffer our region from more intense hurricanes and sea level rise.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) and the Louisiana Trustee Implementation Group (LA-TIG) recently released a Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) and an associated draft Restoration Plan for the Mid-Barataria Sediment Diversion, a cornerstone restoration project of Louisiana’s Coastal Master Plan.
Your input is needed: Voice your support for this important project at this pivotal moment for Louisiana’s coast!
