In this email, I'll be talking about police brutality, anti-Black racism, and the recent events in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota. Please only read if you feel comfortable doing so. Thank you. -- Dwight

It has been a heartbreaking and frustrating few days.

This Sunday, Daunte Wright -- an unarmed Black man -- was shot and killed by police in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota. He was killed sitting in his car just ten miles away from where Derek Chauvin is currently on trial for the murder of George Floyd.

In Wisconsin, news broke that Kenosha officer Rusten Sheskey, who is responsible for shooting Jacob Blake seven times in the back, is returning to duty. He faced zero criminal charges or discipline, while Jacob will be paralyzed for the rest of his life. These separate instances of injustice are infuriating.

But they are also all too familiar of an experience while growing up Black in America.

Lives depend on reforming our justice system to root out the systemic racism that kills Black people and lets the officers responsible walk free. It's why I supported the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act to create a national standard for policing and to make sure officers are charged at the same level as citizens.
