Real Justice

John, moments ago, this news broke: police officer Kim Potter — who brutally murdered Daunte Wright — will only be charged with manslaughter.

Listen. She had been on the police force for 25 years. Was President of the police union. Was training another cop at the time that she killed Daunte.

Yeah right that this was an accidental discharge.

I can’t say that I am surprised. But I do think we should be angry.

We desperately need district attorneys who will prosecute police crimes with the seriousness they deserve. And right now, we have a chance to build critical groundwork to elect a compassionate, civil rights-minded district attorney right where this case is happening, in Hennepin County. The District Attorney there is terrible and refused to even prosecute the case — so it got passed over to a DA in another county.

Will you rush a $5 contribution to help us recruit and run a bold DA who WILL prosecute police crimes in Hennepin County and more cities across the country? Please add any amount you can afford. It all makes a difference.

This is urgent. Failure to hold police like Kim accountable will only reinforce to police everywhere that they live above the law.

Now let me back up and break down more about this case, ok?

On Sunday, Daunte Wright was pulled over by Minnesota police for having an air freshener hanging on his rear-view mirror.

Just a few minutes later, he was lying dead in the street — shot and killed by Officer Kim Potter.

The police are already in full damage-control mode, calling it an "accidental discharge."

I call bullshit. They’ve tried to tell these lies in other cases before.

In 2019, when police killed a young autistic man, Kim Potter instructed the other officers to turn off their body cameras and hide the evidence. Their cover-up attempt was caught, but all of them were cleared of wrongdoing by the Hennepin County Attorney’s office.

This is exactly how police get away with murder in America. And it’s why the work we’re doing at Real Justice is more important than ever.

Police unions, like the one that Kim Potter was the president of, donate HUGE sums of money to elect pro-cop District and County Attorneys.

So when people like Daunte Wright are murdered, the cops remain unpunished.

John, we have the power to change that together.

Right now, the Hennepin County District Attorney, Mike Freeman, will be UNOPPOSED in the upcoming election. He may not run for re-election at all.

This gives us a huge opportunity to elect a compassionate leader instead. One who will hold police like Kim Potter accountable, and stand up for Black lives.

Can you rush a $5 donation to kickstart our District Attorney recruitment efforts? We want to build the groundwork NOW so they can hit the ground running.

With your support, the Real Justice team has elected DOZENS of powerful District Attorneys all across the country.

I can’t put into words how proud I am of that fact.

Combined, these new leaders have implemented REVOLUTIONARY changes to the policing and so-called "justice" systems. And they cover millions of people across their jurisdictions.

They’ve also cracked down on HUNDREDS of police officers for abusing their power and terrorizing families.

We have a chance to do the same thing right here in Hennepin County. But only with your help. Please make a contribution today.

I know we can’t undo Daunte Wright’s death. And that’s heartbreaking.

But we CAN elect a leader who will do everything they can to dismantle the systems that give cops the free reign to kill without accountability.

Appreciate you,

Shaun
