** Join the Inaugural Civic Season:
Juneteenth - July 4th, 2021
------------------------------------------------------------
A joint effort led by Civics Unplugged, Made By Us (an Our Common Purpose champion) and young people across the nation, the inaugural Civic Season will invite all Americans to join in the process of creating a new civic tradition. As we build towards the nation’s 250th anniversary in 2026, the Civic Season reaches beyond civic responsibility to cultivate civic opportunity: chances to pitch in, take part, and play a role in writing the next chapter of our shared national history.
The American story has been shaped by many hands and many moments. The Civic Season is anchored by those who preserve America’s stories and those who are writing it today.
How to Get Involved in the 2021 Civic Season:
* Submit your relevant events, programs, and resources to be considered for inclusion ([link removed]) by April 20 - the earlier the better!
* Sign up to receive the promotional toolkit ([link removed]) , so you can share the Season on your social media channels, newsletters, and websites

** Request For Proposals: Evaluating Ranked-Choice Voting in New York City
------------------------------------------------------------
The Unite America Institute (an Our Common Purpose champion) and Common Cause New York seek research partners to evaluate the impact of ranked-choice voting in New York City. On June 22, New York City will become the largest jurisdiction to ever use ranked-choice voting with more than 500 candidates running for office. The election provides a critical opportunity for researchers to understand the implementation of the reform and to evaluate key communication strategies used in the lead up to the election.
Interested parties are encouraged to submit proposals to Tyler Fisher, Unite America’s Sr. Director of Policy & Partnerships, by the end of business on April 22, 2021:

** How Political Institutions Shape Outcomes and How We Might Reform Them
------------------------------------------------------------
** April 15, 2021 from 1-2pm EDT
------------------------------------------------------------
This event ([link removed]) will examine how U.S. political institutions are often seen as neutral, but in fact reflect choices and compromises about how we balance between majority and minority interests. Panelists Lee Drutman, Katie Fahey, and Cara McCormick, led by Danielle Allen, will investigate the way different systems of electoral decision-making in a democracy can, by themselves, lead to very different outcomes, and what can be done to reform them in ways that result in more responsive and deliberative legislative bodies.
This event is the second of three in the Kluge series, entitled “Our Common Purpose—A Campaign for Civic Strength at the Library of Congress ([link removed]) .” Events also include Using Civic Media to Build A Better Society ([link removed]) on March 11th and Finding a Shared Historical Narrative ([link removed]) on May 13th.

** Educating for American Democracy and the American Academy of Arts & Sciences Present:

** Investing in Civic Education and Our Democracy
------------------------------------------------------------
** April 21, 2021 from 4:30-5:45pm ET
------------------------------------------------------------
A healthy democracy requires citizens who have the skills and knowledge to participate fully in the democratic process. The American Academy of Arts & Sciences’ Our Common Purpose report found that, even in today’s polarized political era, Americans across the country agree that the United States needs to invest in its civic education for young people. There is less agreement on what exactly that education should cover. A new report from Educating for American Democracy (EAD) brought together leaders from around the country and across the political spectrum to develop a roadmap toward a new, national commitment to civic education.
Please join representatives from the American Academy and Educating for American Democracy for a critical conversation with students, educators, and scholars about the role of civic education in fostering a new generation of empowered citizens committed to forging a vibrant democracy.
This program will spotlight the Our Common Purpose recommendation to invest in civic education ([link removed]) as well as the EAD’s report, Roadmap to Educating for American Democracy ([link removed]) .
