I have an important update: Markup for my bill to make Washington, D.C. our country’s 51st state is happening today and the House is scheduled to bring it up for a vote next week.

This isn’t a partisan issue and it’s not even a D.C. issue -- it’s an American issue and an issue of basic fairness.

The more than 700,000 Americans who call D.C. home, work and have built families in our great country just like the rest of us, and they deserve a full voice in our democracy.

“No taxation without representation” is more than just a slogan on D.C. license plates . With today’s markup, we’re one step closer to correcting a longstanding injustice and fulfilling the promise our Founding Fathers envisioned for our country.
