Dear Colleague,

The latest issue of the Clearinghouse’s quarterly research digest provides abstracts of articles from the peer-reviewed literature on male circumcision, with a focus on voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) for HIV prevention. This issue covers articles published from 1 January to 31 March 2021.

Links are provided to either the abstract online or the full text of articles that are open access. For additional information on VMMC, search the Clearinghouse’s Resource Library.

Featured Articles

  • A modeling study estimated that South Africa’s VMMC program averted 71,000–83,000 new HIV infections from 2010 to 2017; the male circumcisions already conducted will prevent 496,000–518,000 infections (6–7% of all new infections) by 2030.

  • A review found that evidence on the protective effect of VMMC against common sexually transmitted infections (STI) is available for heterosexual men and women, but more evidence is required for men who have sex with men.

  • In an analysis of nationally representative surveys in eight countries in sub-Saharan Africa, medical male circumcision was associated with lower HIV incidence in men ages 15–34 years.

Other abstracts featured in the digest address the cost-effectiveness of a combination HIV prevention intervention in South Africa and Zambia; the integration of VMMC recruitment and follow-up in STI and antenatal care clinics in Malawi; the potential impact of VMMC on cervical cancer cases and deaths in Uganda; and the effects of device-based circumcisions compared with standard surgical techniques in adolescent and adult males.

Best regards,

Clearinghouse Webmaster
