The world is desperate for action on climate. Atmospheric carbon levels continue to climb, triggering increased incidents of extreme weather, environmental catastrophe, and political and societal upheaval. We’re well past the point of looking for answers in the same old places. The Aspen Institute—long the seeker of big ideas—believes that the best places to look for climate solutions are among those who are most affected and marginalized.

Could American schools hold lessons for solving climate change? Yes, suggests K12 Climate Action Initiative's Laura Schifter in an op-ed for the Hechinger Report. She notes that the 480,000 public school buses are the largest mass transit fleet in the country. "Public schools have enormous energy, infrastructure and transportation needs,” she writes, and the "decarbonizing" of schools could demonstrate replicable improvements throughout society.
