Jack xxxxxx,
Republicans in the Texas State Legislature are trying to launch a cruel attack on Texans experiencing homelessness.
Yesterday they held a hearing on a bill, SB987 that would leave Texas cities no choice but to use criminal penalties against people who pose no threat to public safety.
Instead of providing the funding and support Texans without homes need, Republicans are trying to strong-arm cities into fining and locking up people camping in public places.
This bill is cruel, and counterproductive. The Legislature should be providing support and housing to Texans experiencing homelessness - not more fines and jail time.
Can you help us send a message to the State Legislature to stop their cruel attacks on Texans experiencing homelessness? Add your name to our petition now.
SB 987 is cruel, plain and simple. It would give unhoused people tickets they can't pay, warrants that prevent them from getting stability, and arrests that give them criminal records. It would put barrier after barrier in front of homeless Texans seeking employment and housing.
This bill by Texas Republicans would keep unhoused Texans out of housing even longer. It’s counter-productive - particularly during a pandemic.
We know what addresses homelessness: housing. Our legislature should be providing pathways to housing, not more barriers to it.
Help us send them a message: stop your cruel attacks on Texans experiencing homelessness.
Thank you for always speaking out for those who need it,
