Dear Friend, The Afro-Indigenous Garifuna community in Honduras is struggling to protect its land from palm oil plantations and drug smugglers. On July 18, 2020, four youth from the Black Fraternal Organization of Honduras (OFRANEH) were abducted and have not been seen since. OFRANEH is our partner in the Root Causes Initiative, working to address the underlying corruption, violence, and poverty that force so many people from Central America to migrate. One step we can take in the U.S. to support our brothers and sisters in Honduras is to ask our Senators to support the Honduras Human Rights and Anti-Corruption Act of 2021. Click here to send a personalized email to your Senators asking them to co-sponsor legislation protecting human rights in Honduras. The legislation would sanction Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández for his involvement in drug trafficking and human rights abuses and cut off U.S. security assistance until the people who assassinated and disappeared dozens of indigenous and human rights activists are brought to justice, and human rights protected in Honduras. The legislation also calls for the re-opening of the Mission to Support the Fight against Corruption and Impunity in Honduras, which President Hernández closed in 2020. Hernández is an unindicted co-conspirator in a 2019 U.S. federal criminal case that convicted his brother for trafficking 440,000 pounds of cocaine into the U.S. Ask your Senators to add their names as a co-sponsor of S. 388 and press for its passage.
