Georgia's Governor just signed a sweeping voter suppression bill into law – undoubtedly inspired and emboldened by the despicable lies told by Donald Trump and GOP leaders this past election cycle. This modern-day Jim Crow bill is just one of 361 voter suppression bills filed in 47 states this year – all aimed at making it harder for millions of Americans to vote.
That's why we must pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Act – legislation I co-sponsored to put an end to outrageous, GOP-led voter suppression and protect the right to vote. I'm counting on 1,000 members of this team to join me before midnight in demanding the Senate pass this crucial legislation, and I need you to be one of them.
The excuses Republicans are using for their push to undermine voting rights – and our democracy along with them – are thinly veiled. Ted Cruz made the true reason loud and clear when he said that Democrats "will win and maintain control of the House of Representatives and the Senate and of the state legislatures for the next century" if we make it easier for people to vote.
This slate of GOP-led voter suppression bills is nothing but a shameful power grab.
Republicans know that when people vote, Democrats win. So they're making it as difficult as possible for the American people to make their voices heard at the ballot box.
