Friend, At the peak of school closures in April 2020, 1.6 billion students globally were forced out of classrooms. In the beginning of 2021, that number still hovered around 700 million. Such unprecedented time online, with little adult supervision, has accelerated the proliferation of online hate content and recruitment. In an effort to provide parents and caregivers with the best tools and information to support students engaging in virtual learning, we continue to revise our guide Building Resilience & Confronting Risk in the COVID-19 Era. Produced in partnership with American University’s Polarization and Extremism Research and Innovation Lab (PERIL), this guide is designed to help caregivers, parents, educators and others who regularly interact with young people to recognize and respond to radicalization in the COVID-19 era. On Tuesday, April 20, the PERIL and SPLC partnership invites you to learn more about the transnational aspects of extremist movements and various efforts to confront those ideologies at our webinar: Transnational Perspectives on White Supremacy: Strategies, Interventions & Lessons Learned Moderated by Cynthia Miller-Idriss, director of PERIL, our three panelists will be: Dr. Joel Busher (he/him), associate professor at the Centre for Trust, Peace and Social Relations at Coventry University Vidhya Ramalingam (she/her), founder and CEO of Moonshot CVE David Shanks (he/him), chief censor of New Zealand The Building Resilience & Confronting Risk in the COVID-19 Era guide is available for free here, and we encourage you to share it with anyone who may be supporting young people through this difficult time. In solidarity, Your friends at the Southern Poverty Law Center P.S.
