Student debt is a national crisis. The average cost to attend college nowadays is $35,720 per student, per year -- that means the cost of a diploma today comes out to nearly $143,000. And that is not even taking into account the additional debt that a graduate incurs due to student loan interest.
The price we pay for pursuing higher education has tripled over the last 20 years. College graduates all across our country are saddled with burdensome student debt that they diligently continue to pay for years, yet they cannot seem to see the end of those costly payments.
We must continue to keep up the drumbeat and speak out for action on student debt relief.
That's why NextGen America is proud to partner with the NAACP, SEIU, Student Debt Crisis, Generation Progress, and Center for Responsible Lending. As trailblazers in the fight to cancel student debt, we are now taking collective action to alleviate the grave financial burden that impacts approximately 45 million people in the United States.
As a part of our collaboration, we are asking folks across our organizations to submit their student debt story. Whether you have debt of your own, have already paid it off, have loved ones in debt, or never had student loans, we all benefit from eliminating debt, as it will boost economic health nationwide and make education more accessible for generations to come.

As we continue to navigate a deadly pandemic and a struggling economy, making ends meet has been hard. By signing an executive order, with the stroke of a pen, President Biden has the authority to cancel federal student debt and provide immediate relief to America’s working families who have suffered greatly under the weight of debilitating loans.
