This Week In Policy: Self Managed Abortion @ 4 ET

Friend,

Did you know that the abortion pills, mifepristone and misoprostol, are safer than aspirin or Viagra?

When I learned this, I wondered why, if I wanted a medication abortion, I’d have to take those pills in front of a doctor. In Texas, that makes it 3-4 separate trips to an abortion provider a person must make to obtain an abortion. I know I’m capable of taking 5 pills on my own — I mean, I manage to take my vitamins *almost* every day!

So, why the over-medicalization of medication abortion? Well, if you’re an anti-abortion politician, it’s a great way to keep abortion from being accessible. Imagine if a person seeking abortion could just walk into a pharmacy and get their abortion medication? Or better yet, have it shipped to their home?

Imagine how many people would be able to avoid the shaming and the harassment from anti-abortion extremists at clinics or the state-sanctioned emotional violence that is mandated ultrasounds and disinformation about abortion that many of our states require abortion providers to say.

Living in world where people can easily access medication abortion without shame or stigma sounds pretty great to me.
