In the wake of horrific mass shootings in Georgia, Colorado, and South Carolina, President Biden recently announced that he will take executive actions to curb the epidemic of gun violence.
I applaud the president and his administration for their efforts to address this American crisis -- but without action from Congress, we simply won’t be able to do enough.
Over the past two years, Democrats in the House have repeatedly passed critical legislation to expand background checks. I urge leadership and my colleagues to support passing a new ban on assault weapons -- and I believe that we can.
But, infuriatingly, we’ve seen before exactly what could happen in the Senate. Laws that will help save American lives could stall thanks to Republican lawmakers serving the gun lobby and the NRA instead of their constituents.
The fact is, gun violence is a disturbingly American problem -- one that President Biden rightly called “a blemish on our character as a nation.” And we know how to help stop it! We’ve seen it from the example of peer countries like Australia, the United Kingdom, and Canada: stricter gun laws lead to fewer gun deaths.
Just 103 days into 2021, our nation has already seen 143 mass shootings.
This has to stop.
We couldn’t do it after Sandy Hook. After Aurora. After Parkland. I hope that we can finally get this done now.
Ban assault weapons. Enforce background checks. Take action.
