John --

Over the past year, the AAPI community in America has faced a dramatic increase in hate crimes. Our grandfathers have been knocked to the ground, our grandmothers punched in the face, 6 Asian women were shot and killed in Atlanta, and we have seen so many more awful, hateful acts carried out against Asian Americans. Yet when the issue was brought to Congress, almost all Republican lawmakers ignored the facts.

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy claimed crimes against the AAPI community were not a priority.

Rep. Doug Collins claimed Democratic legislation to combat anti-AAPI hate crimes was just an “opportunity to criticize President Trump.”

And when Democrats held a hearing on the surge in hate crimes, Rep. Chip Roy dismissed it as “policing of rhetoric.”

Why are Republicans ignoring this crisis? Because it's their own rhetoric that fanned the flames. And now, Republican lawmakers are using the anti-AAPI crisis as an opportunity to re-launch their anti-affirmative action plans. Instead of confronting the role their words and actions played in creating the dangerous environment we now live in, they're using it as a chance to pass legislation that has nothing to do with solving this crisis.

It's time to elect lawmakers who understand the crisis facing our community, because it's their community too. We must hold accountable those who ignore our pain or try to turn it to support their own ends -- and that means backing candidates who can run and unseat these GOP xenophobes.
