John, let me be frank — the latest report from my colleagues is devastating. This year, the U.S. is on track to admit the lowest number of refugees ever.

BREAKING NEWS:
A new analysis from the International Rescue Committee reveals that, with Trump Administration policies still in place, only 2,050 refugees have been admitted to the United States through its refugee resettlement program midway through the 2021 fiscal year, a new historic low despite promises by the Biden administration to immediately increase the number of refugees allowed to resettle into the country.

President Biden's delay in issuing his revised refugee policy has prevented tens of thousands of already-cleared refugees from Africa, Asia, and the Middle East from resettling in the U.S., with over 700 refugees' flights from some of the world’s toughest crisis zones cancelled as a result. This inhumane delay has impacted refugees like Patrice Maneno, who hasn't seen his daughter in five years and doesn’t know when he will see her next: her flight was cancelled while she was already waiting at the airport.

Without the President's signature, discriminatory and restrictive Trump Administration policies continue to disproportionately block many Muslim, African and Asian refugees from entering the country. As a Black American, I cannot put into words how frustrating it is to see this type of discrimination still occuring in a humanitarian program with the potential to be life-saving for so many.

I'm emailing the White House and my members of Congress today. I hope you'll do the same.

Subject: John, I'm asking you to join me in urging President Biden to take action now

John, President Biden has work to do.

When I last reached out to you, I asked you to thank President Biden for the progress he has made towards his commitment to refugees, asylum seekers and immigrants. While the administration has made good on some of these promises, the Biden administration has not yet finalized the increased refugee admissions goal for the year. It's time to take action.

By not taking a crucial final step — signing a Presidential Determination on Refugee Admissions — many of these changes he committed to refugees have not been implemented. As a result, hundreds of refugees have had their resettlement flights cancelled and are being forced to wait in increasingly distressing and precarious situations.

John: That is why I am asking you to join me in urging President Biden to sign the Presidential Determination now »

Here's what the Biden administration has accomplished so far:
✔️Proposed an increased refugee admissions goal of 62,500 refugees this fiscal year
✔️Proposed a private sponsorship pilot initiative, granting Americans the power to personally sponsor and welcome refugees
✔️Proposed a return to regional categories of refugee admission that are needs-centered
✔️Held consultations with members of the House and Senate Judiciary Committees on these proposals
❌ Sign the Emergency Presidential Determination on Refugee Admissions

Signing the Presidential Determination is the only thing delaying refugee arrivals right now.
Along with the rest of the team in D.C., we are pushing the president to take action. I'm asking you to join me in calling on the White House as this issue is too urgent for the administration to delay.

If we do not convince President Biden to sign, more and more refugees will be left in limbo, waiting for the life-saving option of resettlement in the U.S. I have personally called and emailed the White House to maximize my impact. I hope you'll do the same.
