Community Leaders, Law Enforcement Urging Angelenos Demanding Justice To Protest Peacefully
Community leaders and law enforcement chiefs across Los Angeles County are urging residents who plan to protest in the wake of tensions in Minnesota to do it peacefully. On Monday, Los Angeles police chief Michel Moore, Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva, FBI Los Angeles' Kristi Johnson took the podium to call for nonviolence in SoCal, as the entire county has its eyes on the ongoing tensions in Minnesota. While FBI has no plans to go after peaceful protesters, Johnson warned the public that arson, looting, vandalism and violence are not protected speech. Villanueva, who says LASD learned a lot of lessons from the 2020 George Floyd protests, plans to request the National Guard to be on standby in case of any unrest in Los Angeles in the coming days. In Brooklyn Center, a Minneapolis suburb, protesters took to the police station to demand justice for 20-year-old Daunte Wright. Wright, a Black man, was fatally shot by Brooklyn Center police officer Kim Potter. In Minneapolis, a tense trial is underway for Derek Chauvin, the former police officer who was seen kneeling on George Floyd's neck.

Man Killed, Woman Taken Into Custody In Hyde Park Area
A woman was in custody Monday for allegedly killing a man in the Hyde Park area. Officers went to the 5900 block of Seventh Avenue about 9:50 p.m. Sunday, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. David White, 61, of Los Angeles died at the scene, according to the coroner’s office and the LAPD, which reported that a 37-year-old woman was arrested for allegedly hitting the man on the head with an unknown object. The suspect’s name was not immediately available, and police did not describe the circumstances surrounding the man’s death.

Lilliana Carrillo, the woman accused of killing her three young children in Reseda, was fighting to retain custody of the kids amid allegations about her mental stability - and a court was set to consider the issue only days after the murders occurred, records show. Carrillo was involved in a custody dispute in Tulare County. The father of the children alleged she was displaying paranoid behavior and postpartum depression that left her out of touch with reality.

Man, Stolen Vehicle Found Engulfed In Flames In Rancho Park; Burn Victim In Critical Condition
A man was hospitalized with third-degree burns after being found engulfed in flames alongside a burning, stolen vehicle in Rancho Park Monday night, officials said. Firefighters were called to the scene near the corner of Overland Avenue and Coventry Place around 8:30 p.m. and found the compact sedan parked and fully engulfed in flames, the Los Angeles Fire Department said in an alert. The burning man was extinguished by neighbors before fire officials arrived, said Los Angeles police Officer Matthew Jones. LAFD says they found the man on a nearby lawn in extremely critical condition with full-body burns. Fire crews were able quickly extinguish the vehicle fire. The vehicle involved was reported stolen earlier this month, according to Jones. Arson investigators were responding to ensure no further accelerants were on the vehicle and to “get a better idea of what he was doing at the time,” Jones said. The incident remains under investigation by LAPD and LAFD. No further details were available.

Speed A Factor In South L.A. Crash That Killed Driver’s 3 Passengers, CHP Says
A driver was injured and three of his passengers were killed in a late-night crash in the Florence neighborhood of South Los Angeles Sunday. Officers responded to a three-vehicle collision reported at the intersection of Florence and Central avenues about 10:51 p.m., the California Highway Patrol stated in a news release. Investigators believe the driver of a 2007 Toyota was traveling at an unsafe speed eastbound on Florence Avenue when he lost control of the vehicle and collided with a Jeep, which in turn struck the back of a third vehicle, described as a Honda. The Toyota continued out of control until slamming into a building and then a pole. A male passenger was ejected from the Toyota and pronounced dead at the scene, the CHP stated. Two more male passengers, found in the back seat of the Toyota, were also pronounced dead at the scene. The driver, a 20-year-old man from Hawthorne, was taken to St. Francis Medical Center with moderate injuries, CHP said. Los Angeles County coroner’s officials have identified two of the three who were killed as 14-year-old Myshawn Logan of Los Angeles and 23-year-old Quindien Holmes of Los Angeles. The third victim has only been described as a man in his 20s.

Armed Man Arrested In Sylmar After Triggering School Lockdown
A report of an armed suspect in a Sylmar neighborhood Monday triggered the evacuation of Sylmar Charter High School today before the man was safely taken into custody, authorities said. Police received reports of a man waving a knife at passing vehicles about 12:30 p.m. near an apartment complex in the area of Sayre Street and Dronfield Avenue, according to Officer William Cooper of the Los Angeles Police Department's Media Relations Division. Officers who responded to the area and attempted to make contact with the man noticed that he was also armed with what appeared to be a rifle, authorities said. Police established a perimeter around the apartment complex and requested backup from SWAT and K9 units, Cooper said. The high school was placed on lockdown as a precaution, and staff and students were evacuated about 2:20 p.m., according to a Los Angeles School Police Department statement. Police took the suspect into custody about 2:55 p.m. without further incident, Cooper said, and the campus lockdown was subsequently lifted. The suspect's name was not immediately released.

Reckless Driver Evades Police After Pursuit Through Hollywood
Officers with the California Highway Patrol were in pursuit of a blue Honda Civic in the heart of Hollywood on Friday. The driver was reportedly wanted for crossing double lines and being in the HOV lane alone. The pursuit began near Baldwin Park and drove through downtown LA, the 10 Freeway and 101 Freeway and finally drove through surface streets in Hollywood. SkyFOX above captured the driver running red lights and crossing lanes of traffic, even at one time trying to get onto the sidewalk. At one point the driver stopped his vehicle in the middle of a residential road and got out of his car to retrieve some items from his trunk. The items appear to be clothes, which the driver then placed in the back seat and took off again. CHP officers eventually called off the pursuit. The LAPD ultimately decided to terminate the pursuit, said Officer Tony Im of the Media Relations Division. The LAPD will file a report of the crime using the car's license plate number.

Police Seek Assistance To Locate Missing 69-Year-Old Woman
A 69-year-old woman who has what police called a “poor mental condition” and requires medication was reported missing after last being seen in Koreatown Monday. Jennifer Lee was last seen at about 1:30 p.m. in the 3200 block of Olympic Boulevard, near Western Avenue, police said. Lee is Asian, 5 feet, 1 inch tall, weighs 120 pounds and has brown hair and black eyes. She was last seen wearing a black and white striped shirt with rainbow sleeves and black polka dot pants. She wears prescription glasses. Lee frequents the areas of Seventh Street and Western Avenue and Ninth Street and Western Avenue in Koreatown, according to police. Anyone with information on Lee’s whereabouts was asked to call the Los Angeles Police Department’s Missing Persons Unit at 213-996-1800.

Police Searching For 21-Year-Old Missing Chatsworth Woman
Authorities are searching for a 21-year-old woman who went missing in Chatsworth, the Los Angeles Police Department reported Monday. Anessa Granillo was last seen entering a silver four-door sedan with tinted windows on Saturday at about 5:20 p.m. in the 21500 block of Lassen Street, according to an LAPD statement, which says she "has a poor mental condition and needs medication." Granillo is Hispanic, 5-foot-1 and weighs about 194 pounds, with brown hair and eyes. She was last seen wearing a blue jeans jacket and blue jeans, sandals, white-framed glasses and carrying a black purse. Granillo's family is very concerned and needs the public's help locating her. Suspects In Culver City 7-Eleven Robberies Arrested
Two suspects who robbed a pair of Culver City 7-Eleven stores were nabbed by police Sunday morning when they tried to rob a third one nearby in Los Angeles. The robberies happened within a 15-minute span, beginning around 4:50 a.m., according to Culver City police. The first robbery occurred at 4436 Sepulveda Blvd., while the second happened shortly after at 11001 Washington Blvd., police said. After the second robbery, Culver City police began checking nearby locations and spotted two men armed with a handgun and rifle attempting to rob a 7-Eleven clerk at 10356 Venice Blvd., police said. Because that store was in Los Angeles and therefore fell within the jurisdiction of Los Angeles police, the officers called LAPD’s Pacific Division, police said. When the two suspects saw police outside, they ran to the back of the store while the clerk escaped out the front, police said. LAPD officers arrived and took the two suspects into custody without incident, Culver City police said. The two men were identified as the suspects who robbed the other two stores, police said. The men, whose names were withheld, were booked by LAPD officers.

Bell Gardens Police Pursue — And Arrest — One Man Three Times In 6 Months
A 49-year-old man who police said tossed a bag of drugs out of a vehicle during a chase in Bell Gardens was behind bars Friday morning — and it was the third time police pursued and arrested him in the past six months. Officers attempted to stop Ronald Wayne Dowell on April 1, but he refused to pull over and a pursuit ensued, according to Sgt. J. Acosta of the Bell Gardens Police Department. During the pursuit, officers saw a white bag being thrown from the passenger side of the vehicle, and Dowell pulled over a short time later. Officers found the bag, which contained a large amount of drugs, Acosta said. The April 1 pursuit marked the third time in the past six months Dowell led Bell Gardens police on a pursuit, said Acosta. In October, Dowell tossed a handgun and drugs out of a vehicle window during a high-speed pursuit; and during a pursuit in January, Dowell drove on the wrong side of the road, disregarded traffic signs and tossed drugs and a gun from the vehicle during a chase, Acosta said. Dowell is being held on $210,000 bail and is scheduled to be in court Monday to face charges associated with the April 1 pursuit. Charges are still pending at the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for the October and January arrests, Acosta said.

2nd Capitol Officer Slain This Year To Lie In Honor Tuesday
Slain U.S. Capitol Police Officer William “Billy” Evans will lie in honor in the Capitol Rotunda on Tuesday during the second such memorial ceremony this year for a force that has edged close to crisis in the wake of the Jan. 6 insurrection. President Joe Biden and congressional leaders will attend a midday ceremony for Evans, 41, who was killed April 2 when a vehicle rammed into him and another officer at a barricade just 100 yards (91 meters) from the Senate side of the Capitol. The driver, Noah Green, 25, came out of the car with a knife and was shot to death by police. Investigators believe Green had been delusional and increasingly having suicidal thoughts. Evans’ death came just three months after a violent mob of President Donald Trump’s supporters blew past security barricades and attacked the Capitol, injuring dozens of Capitol Police officers. Officer Brian Sicknick died after engaging with the rioters, though officials do not yet know exactly what caused his death. Two men have been arrested and charged with assaulting him with bear spray.

New York Cop Critically Hurt In Traffic Stop Stabbing, Suffers Ruptured Artery
A Long Island cop was stabbed by a suspect during a traffic stop, leaving the officer in critical condition with a ruptured artery, officials said Sunday. Suffolk County Officer Christopher Racioppo spotted Jonathan Nunez speeding erratically in a 1999 Mercedes-Benz with the headlights off in Patchogue Saturday night, authorities said. Racioppo tried to pull Nunez over but he kept going, eventually crashing into a 2004 Nissan at the intersection of South Ocean Ave. and Brook St. in Patchogue around 10:40 p.m., sources said. Nunez, 25, abandoned his crashed car and ran off but Racioppo was able to catch him, tackling him in the front yard of a home, officials said. During the scuffle, Nunez, who lives in Centereach, allegedly pulled out a knife and plunged it into the cop’s leg, slicing a major artery, police said. The gruesome cut went all the way to the bone, severing veins, the artery, and heavily damaging muscle, sources said.

Valley Glen Explosion That Sent 2 To Hospital Not Caused By Gas Leak; Evidence Of Marijuana Grow Found In Garage: LAFD
Investigators found no evidence a gas leak caused the explosion at the Valley Glen home late Sunday that sent two men to the hospital and resulted in evacuations, officials said Monday. They also found no signs it was caused by a THC extraction lab, but there was evidence of marijuana being grown in the garage area, and that is part of the investigation, the LAFD tweeted. When firefighters first arrived at the scene just before 9:30 p.m. in the 12700 block of West Archwood Street, they found no active fire but clear signs of a “significant explosion,” LAFD Capt. Erik Scott said. Crews saw a 59-year-old man outside the home and transported him to a hospital with critical burn injuries. “Firefighters then detected the smell of natural gas and worked to locate and secure the leak,” Scott said. At the same time, crews were systematically searching the house in shoulder-deep debris. That’s when they heard a “faint tapping noise,” the captain said. They started pulling away the debris and found a 46-year-old man buried deep in the rubble.

LA County Reports 11 More Cases Of Inflammatory Syndrome In Children Tied to COVID-19
Los Angeles County reporting 813 new cases of COVID-19 and 37 additional deaths Saturday, along with an additional 11 cases of multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C). The number of coronavirus patients in county hospitals dropped from 508 to 492, according to state figures, which are generally a day ahead of numbers provided by the county. The number of COVID patients in intensive care ticked up from 123 to 125. Saturday's numbers brought the county's totals to 1,225,256 cases and 23,467 fatalities since the pandemic began, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health. The new cases of MIS-C brought that total to 169 cases in the county, including one child death. All 169 were hospitalized and 39% of the children were treated in the ICU. Of the children with MIS-C, 26% were under the age of 5 years old, 31% were between 5 and 9, 27% were between 10 and 14 and 16% were between 15 and 20. Latino/Latinx children account for 75% of the reported cases.MIS-C is a serious inflammatory condition associated with COVID-19 that affects children under 21 years old.

California Braces For Extreme 2021 Wildfire Season - It's Very Dry Out There
The chamise plants that blanket California’s shrubby chaparral should have grown new sprouts by now, flowering after winter rains before baking in the arid summer heat.
They are highly flammable and abundant in wildland areas — and, for that reason, a bellwether to wildfire researchers. This month, a San Jose State University team analyzing moisture levels was shocked at what it found at study sites in the Santa Cruz Mountains.
At two locations researchers found no new growth to cut from the shrubs. It’s an ominous sign of just how dry the vegetation is around California, where boundless numbers of plants and trees have been starved of life-sustaining water thanks to an entire winter of paltry precipitation. Those dry plants are fuel for wildfires, and they’re primed to burn explosively. Craig Clements, director of San Jose State’s Fire Weather Research Laboratory, said it was the first time he had ever found no new chamise growth to study. The plants are about as dry as they would normally be a few months from now, he said.
“The chamise was really, really problematic,” Clements recalled. “They’re not bringing enough soil moisture up into their woody stems to grow. They’re remaining somewhat dormant.” To him, the implications are clear.

L.A. City Council Nears Settlement To Provide Shelter, Clear Homeless People Off Streets
The Los Angeles City Council appears to be heading toward a settlement of a federal lawsuit by agreeing to provide new housing or shelter for thousands of homeless people, while being able to use anti-camping laws to clear anyone remaining on the streets. The new beds would be spread across the city, based on the number of homeless people estimated to be living in each City Council district in 2020, and could require every council member to find locations for hundreds of new beds. It’s not clear how much the city might have to spend to fund this ambitious expansion, although it’s a question council members have asked city finance officials. It’s also not clear what the balance would be between permanent housing and homeless shelters, which are designed to be temporary stops.
