Trigger warning: police brutality
Team,
I was heartbroken and disgusted by the video of two Virginia police officers who drew their guns and pepper sprayed U.S. Army 2nd Lt. Caron Nazario during a traffic stop.
Lt. Nazario was bullied and harassed when he was pulled over, and I’ll never forget the image of a uniformed lieutenant being treated with such abhorrent disrespect.
Oversight and accountability are long overdue. We need to pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act now.
After the video clip of Lt. Nazario surfaced last week, 20-year-old Daunte Wright was shot and killed during a traffic stop in Minnesota on Sunday. He was unarmed.
We cannot sit idly by while Black people across the country continue to die at the hands of the very people sworn to serve and protect. A traffic stop cannot equal a death sentence.
Police reform can’t wait any longer -- sign on now to urge the Senate to pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act.
Yours in service,
Congressman Gerry Connolly
