Hi Friend,
I’m with AFT members in Las Vegas right now, getting ready for our AFT Votes town hall with Julián Castro, Democratic presidential candidate and former secretary of Housing and Urban Development.
We’ll be kicking things off at 7:30 p.m. EDT—tune in now to the livestream on our Facebook page, on YouTube and on Periscope.
I’m excited for our members to have time with Secretary Castro. We’re living in a world where the president is keeping kids in cages and ripping children from the arms of their desperate parents when they seek asylum. Castro’s focus on immigration has been a central part of his campaign, and his proposals put people first. We’ll also discuss his proposals to support teachers and school staff, his “Medicare for All” plan, and questions submitted by our members.
This members-only town hall is the ninth in a series of candidate and member events the union is holding across the country as part of our AFT Votes 2020 presidential endorsement process. This is an opportunity for Castro to hear directly from our members about the issues affecting their lives, as well as an opportunity for you to hear about his campaign and ideas to strengthen our public schools, fight for seniors and improve the lives of working Americans.
The AFT’s 2020 endorsement process is about member engagement, which is why I hope you’ll tune in to hear Castro’s answers to questions members ask in person or have submitted online.
Go to our Facebook page, YouTube or Periscope now to watch the town hall starting at 4:30 p.m. PDT/ 7:30 p.m. EDT.
Over the past few months, the AFT has held town hall meetings with presidential candidates former Vice President Joe Biden, Gov. Steve Bullock, Sen. Kamala Harris, Sen. Amy Klobuchar, former Rep. Beto O’Rourke, Rep. Tim Ryan, Sen. Bernie Sanders and Sen. Elizabeth Warren.
I’m excited to hear what Castro has to say today! Don’t worry if you can’t watch it live right now; the video will stay on the AFT Facebook page so you can watch it anytime—or for a second time.
In unity,
Randi Weingarten
AFT President
