PFLAG Connects

Dear John:

Before you dive into all of the great content we have below, here's one way to show your visible support for trans kids. We've got two new image frames on Facebook--which also show on Instagram--and we'd be grateful if you'd show the world that you're #PFLAGProud to #ProtectTransKids.

To add our frame to your Page's profile picture:

  1. Go to www.facebook.com/profilepicframes

  2. Search for #PFLAGProud as the frame name.

  3. Choose the frame you want to use from the results.

  4. Click Use as Profile Picture.

It's that simple!

Thank you for taking action to do that; we really appreciate your visible support for our transgender loved ones.

Spread the word: Mini grants for young LGBTQ+ advocates

Know an LGBTQ+ youth who needs funding for a social justice project?

Our friends at Campus Pride have launched a new program offering student activists Social Justice Mini Grants for up to $600 to aid their work in making their campuses safer and more welcoming for LGBTQ students, faculty, and staff. Thanks to a generous donation from our mutual partners at HBO Max, they are funding the these grants, in service of fostering “true acceptance” by winning hearts and minds.

Applications are open at www.campuspride.org/actnow.

Three Steps to Being a Better Self-Care Advocate (While You’re Stuck at Home)

Just because you’re staying in doesn’t mean your skills should slow down! So, stay safe and take these steps to engage.

  1. Learn: Read this article on the history of self-care and these 12 quotes from Audre Lorde so you can better understand and explain why taking care of our mental and physical health is an integral part of activism.
  2. Watch: Check out Something to Talk About Live from April 1, 2021, which focused on the mental health impact of COVID-19 on LGBTQ+ youth (and be sure to check out this week’s Something to Talk About Live, where we will continue the conversation). You can also check out this iconic video from Angela Davis on radical self-care posted as a part of a video series by AfroPunk in 2018.
  3. Share: Use social media to share with friends and family what you’ve been doing to take care of yourself lately. Post a list of self-care activities, like this one from GirlBoss, to get the conversation started with groups you are a part of online.

The last day to sign up for the Equality Act Lobby Day

The opposition is outpacing our calls to legislators 10-to-1. We need your PFLAG voices as part of our Lobby Day on Wednesday, April 21st to urge key Senators to pass the Equality Act. Whether your Senator needs to be urged to vote yes--or your Senator needs a big PFLAG THANK YOU for committing to voting yes--we cannot do this without you.

Sign up to lobby NOW (and be sure to sign up as a member or supporter of PFLAG in the drop-down menu). All are welcome to participate; we particularly need voices from Alaska, Florida, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Utah, West Virginia, and Wisconsin to make the case for the Equality Act to key swing votes in the Senate.

Please invite friends and family and all who care about Equality to join us!

Our very special guests this week are Sam Brinton, Vice President of Advocacy and Government Affairs with The Trevor Project and Doreen Marshall, Ph.D., Vice President of Mission Engagement, with American Foundation for Suicide PreventionThis is a continuation of the conversation we started in our April 1st broadcast, and promises to be powerful and informative.

As always, you can watch live on Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, or LinkedIn

For more information, including a link to this week's article and the questions, visit straightforequality.org/something-to-talk-about-live-april-15-2021.

Also, be sure to check out this great article from CNN, "What Meghan's openness about suicidal thoughts can teach us," which features Doreen Marshall, one of our guests this week, for more on this subject.
